Kimchi, Milkshakes, Pope, Big Rich Cabs
All over the place - controlled chaos - just how you like it. Enjoy.
Happy Friday. Let me entertain you for the next 3-4 minutes.
My friends at Foodshed and I are happy to report our Italian wine dinner this Monday is SOLD OUT! I’m taking names for the waiting list. Check out the menu and put your name down HERE.
Four Golden Tickets left for my Piemonte, Italy trip September 14-22.
I’ve fleshed out the schedule with more info on the truffle hunt, cooking class, 5 star hotel, Michelin Star restaurant, Slow Food Cheese Festival and winery tastings. Remember, this trip includes a tasting at GAJA Winery in Barbaresco. Not your average Europe trip, folks. Make it happen! Contact me with questions and interest.
Cookin’
Making Sourdough, Part Two: Boosting My Starter. The night before I make my dough, I add 10% flour/water “booster” to get my yeasts fired up to ferment.
Cookin’ Dos
When it’s time to harvest it’s time to cook. The green onions had to go - make room for the summer garden. Now, here they are:
I’ve made kimchi a few times. If you know the basics it’s very easy to make. This batch, specked with radish and carrot, is my first go using sweet rice flour and dried shrimp. Shout out to my friend Jin for gifting me Korean salt and red pepper flakes (Gochugaru, which I like to pronounce GO-shoo-gah-ROO.)
Drinkin’
M. ETAIN Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2014. Popped it for my Monday Afternoon Club Member tasting (is it time to join?) then finished it at home with slow-cook beef tri-tip and chimichurri (another outcome of garden harvesting - so much parsley). M. Etain (“Tin Man”) is a style of Cab, heady & oaky & sweetness, that’s beaten up by today’s trend setters and their followers. Stop it, because you know what? IT’S DAMN DELICIOUS! No problem drinking more than a glass. There’s room for all styles when they’re made the right way.
And it’s fun pointing out to Holly when a wine we’re drinking has a street value north of $400. This, too, was a gift.

Bein’ A Dad
Close to school, easy stop, good move to keep me on her good side. A drop by Super Duper Burger for a shake is a good investment. I give their shakes 4 out of 5 stars. Not a fan of their burgers though. Too messy, I don’t feel quite right after eating one. I’m intrigued by the Super Duper happy hour: free fries with purchase of a spiked milkshake. There goes my calorie count!
A Show
Nonnas, a new movie on Netflix with Vince Vaugh, Susan Sarandon, Talia Shire and more. Food, family, love, Billy Joel…guaranteed happy tear jerker. Watching it for Mothers Day. Here’s the trailer.
An Artist
New artist for me (naturally I’m 15 years behind the times): Becky G.
Mexican-American singer/performer from Inglewood.
Here’s one of her latest.
Sport
da Pope went to ‘Nova.
Finally
In case you’ve forgotten, the Bald Eagle Live Cam in SoCal’s Big Bear Valley goes on. The babies, Sunny and Gizmo, are growing up! Their first flight, or fledge (word of the day) could be next week!
Join 35,000 others in watching the Live Cam.
You made it: the end of this week’s Eat Drink Cook: a life-journal from a Napa Valley dad, wine expert and enthusiastic cook. Up to twelve subjects, often intertwined, with an emphasis on food, wine, cooking, being a dad and just a guy enjoying these crazy times the best I can. Read me for food & wine tips, recipes, and stuff I come across that you may find interesting too.
